Auricular Acupuncture (or Ear Acupuncture) is a microsystem of acupuncture, a specialised therapy where acupuncture points on the ear are treated. There are over 200 acupuncture points on each ear. The outer ear acts as a switchboard to the brain. Each acupuncture point being treated triggers electrical impulses from the ear via the brain, to the specific part of the body being treated. Functional MRI (fMRI) shows that Auricular Acupuncture triggers an effect in areas of the brain specific to the corresponding zone on the ear. Each point treated releases endorphins which block pain receptors and elevates levels of adenosine, a natural local pain reliever, creating change in the targeted anatomical area.
