Craniosacral Therapy for Adults
Craniosacral therapy for Children & Babies

Craniosacral Therapy is a very gentle, light touch therapy that is performed on fully clothed clients.

The Craniosacral System is the physiological system housed within the bony structures of the skull and spinal column.  It is made up of the membranes and cerebrospinal fluid that encloses the brain and spinal cord (the Central Nervous System).  Cerebrospinal fluid is the clear fluid which circulates around the brain and spinal cord, providing protection, distributing nutrients and removing waste products.  As cerebrospinal fluid is created and absorbed, it creates a gentle rhythm that can be felt anywhere in the body.

The Central Nervous System (CNS) is one of our most important systems in ensuring our bodies function correctly.  As the Craniosacral System houses the CNS, it too plays a significant role in maintaining our bodies’ health and wellbeing.

Dealing with our life experiences places stress and strain on our bodies which, over time, can lead to tensions in our bodies’ tissues.  These tensions or restrictions can distort the Craniosacral System, also impacting our CNS, putting pressure on our bodies’ ability to function properly and self heal.  Craniosacral Therapy helps correct these tensions so the body can more easily release the effects of stress.

The Craniosacral therapist tunes into the rhythm of the cerebrospinal fluid to evaluate the Craniosacral System.  Gentle manual techniques are then used to release any restrictions.  These restrictions can be located within the Craniosacral system itself or elsewhere in the body.  Treatment, therefore, can be on the whole body and not just focused on the head and spinal area.  The forces used are exceedingly light, generally using about 5g of pressure – equivalent to the weight of a 10c coin.

Craniosacral Therapy can be beneficial for a wide variety of conditions, used alone or in conjunction with other therapies. From general conditions (stress-related, dizziness, migraine etc.) to musculoskeletal conditions (trauma or injury, sciatica, frozen shoulder, sports injuries), to digestive problems, behavioural conditions, neurological conditions, learning difficulties and immune system dysfunction.

However, you don’t have to be sick to benefit from Craniosacral Therapy as this gentle therapy enhances general health, reduces accumulated stress, strengthens central nervous system function and improves resistance to disease.

It is suitable for all ages, including new born babies, children, the elderly and also throughout pregnancy.

Craniosacral Therapy for Children & Babies.

As mentioned above, as the Craniosacral System directly impacts the Central Nervous System, imbalances or tensions in this area can cause any number of sensory, motor or neurological difficulties.

Often, the birth process can be a difficult experience for babies and can lead to restrictions that may be carried throughout life, often only presenting as difficulties later in childhood or adulthood.

A Craniosacral Therapy evaluation and treatment soon after birth can minimize or release such restrictions.  But regardless of your child’s age, they are never too old to benefit from a Craniosacral Therapy treatment.  Whether as a treatment in its own right or as an adjunct to other approaches, Craniosacral Therapy can assist babies, older children and adolescents with a wide variety of challenges.

Some conditions addressed by Craniosacral Therapy in babies and children include:

  • Crying / Unsettled Babies
  • Reflux, Colic and Wind
  • Abnormal Head Shape (Plagiocephaly)
  • Recurrent Infections
  • Squints (Strabismus)
  • Asthma
  • Movement Disorders
  • Learning Problems
  • Dyslexia & Dyspraxia
  • Autistic Spectrum Disorder
  • Cerebral Palsy
